What is Blu-ray?

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data.

What is HD DVD?

HD DVD (High-Definition/Density DVD) is a discontinued high-density optical disc format for storing data and high-definition video.

The HD DVD-Video structure includes extended versions of the conventional DVD-Video object (VOB) and Video navigation. Exclusive to HD-Video is the Advanced Object, encompassing advanced graphics and text that, for example, makes possible user selection of subtitle font and positioning, benefiting both hearing and visually impaired viewers.

What is VCD?

VCD (Video CD, video compact disc or "disc") that contains video and audio - moving pictures and sound.  It is capable of holding up to 74 minutes of full-motion video with quality stereo sound.  VCD uses the MPEG-1 standard to store video and audio in a high density form. The quality of a very good VCD is about the same as a VHS tape based movie but VCD is usually a bit more blurry.
